「府」になったのは1868年に設置された京都府を皮切りに江戸府、神奈川府、奈良府、大阪府、長崎府などの計10カ所。ただ神奈川府がわずか２カ月足らずで神奈川県に変わるなど、地方制度や境界線はめまぐるしく変わった。
